about

_________________________________________________________

Three years after his first album («Trio.org»), the Venetian Nicola Dal Bo gives us an insight into a different possible development for the almost canonical lineup of the Organ Trio, replacing the more conventional guitar with saxophone, which provides a perhaps more original and less predictable perspective to the music usually offered by this type of band. The saxes are played by Nevio Zaninotto, a musician which has grown a lot in the recent years, confirming the fertility of jazz in his region, Friuli Venezia Giulia, also home of the magnificent Luca Colussi, perhaps the most versatile and requested drummer today in the area. The interesting perspectives opened by the use of the sax, especially tenor in this case, together with Dal Bo’s light and at the same time incisive approach, different from that of most Hammond specialists around – perhaps due to the fact that he never abandoned the piano, which he uses here, as in the first album, for a short final “solo” (Finally) – allow the trio to provide, for example, a surprisingly refined version of the adagio of a famous Beethoven sonata, almost a jazz ballad, but also to create a simple yet effective arrangement of the very popular Secret love, ideal springboard for Zaninotto’s impetuous but always lucid tenor sax. Among the leader’s tracks, those which deserve to be remembered are, at least, the effective and hypnotic initial riff in IFD, the original rework in Monkian style of What is this thing called love? – one of the most used standards in the boppers’ contrafacts – which here becomes, more simply, What is this? – as well as the more harmonically complex and articulated theme that provides the title track, Bad vibes. We then go back to a full Organ Trio atmosphere with R.A.M., thanks to a blues flavored melody, easy to memorize, the only piece composed by Zaninotto, that in the following ballad, 2–3–7, another composition by the leader, proves that he can also master the soprano sax
