about

All music arranged by Alessia Obino and Cordas.
Recorded by Andrea Scardovi at Duna Studio, Russi (Ravenna), in July 2015. .

_________________________________________________________

Although she is one of the most original vocalists in the Italian jazz scene, very active on the live concert side, Alessia Obino has always been kind of “stingy” in the release of records, considering that six years have passed between the first album, «Echoes», and her second asa leader, «Deep changes». This contributes to the merit of a very much alive and presentwork, not yet concluded, and that, precisely for this reason, needed a testament. Long thought up and tested, Cordas is only one of many projects in recent years starring the singer from Bologna, but among them it’s perhaps the most successful and impressive. Born in 2011 with the guitars of Enrico Terragnoli and
Domenico Caliri, Cordas becomes a quartet in 2013 with the addition of violinist Dimitri Sillato, and in 2014 sees the substitution of Caliri with guitarist Giancarlo Bianchetti. Two years of relative stability and great activity have led to this album, far too long awaited by his many admirers, that, given the circumstances, could have been anything but trivial. Many are the “strings” pulled by «Deep changes», but all of them,
as much as abstract, bizarre and contemporary they might seem, are rooted in the tradition. The “deep” tradition of Skip James’s blues (here magically blended with Africa) or the one of Hoagy Carmichael’s American song, the one by Kurt Weill, author that Alessia Obino has known for a long time and that here has the lion’s share (the version of The saga of Jenny, conveniently chosen to open the album, is memorable), or the one of a “revolutionary traditionalist” as Charles Mingus. And the presence of just one original track, Nightime, is not enough to make this recording less coherent or interesting than the last. The selected route might not seem very linear at first, but is revealed as the right one in the end: the “Cordas vessel” arrives at its destination in the best way, strengthened not only by a distinctive timbre connotation, but also by a clear stylistic design, recognizable and innovative.
