Ruud Brink (1937-1990) was one of the most significant Dutch jazz masters, an innovative, inventive and lyrical tenor saxophonist, a lucid interpreter of a kind of post–bop jazz strongly associated with the cool school and masters of the instrument of the likes of Stan Getz and Jimmy Giuffre, Ben Webster and Zoot Sims. With the last two musicians he also recorded and played gigs. Playing with a warm and captivating sound, he would accompany with unique discretion and mastery especially the vocalists: such quality allowed him to perform duets with Astrud Gilberto and Tony Bennett. He taught at The Hague Conservatory and gained much recognition in his country, but he died unfortunately before his time – he was only 52 – at the height of his artistic career.
In the second half of the Eighties Ruud Brink would often come to Italy, frequenting especially Verona’s jazz scene, where he would always be given an enthusiastic welcome. Right in Verona he recorded one of his rare albums as leader, this very «Double Face» released as Lp in 1989 through Elicona and unfindable for a long time. When we discovered that we had the tape of that priceless recording, it was natural for us to remaster and release it, this time on Cd. The album, which does justice to an unfairly forgotten artist, captures him at the height of his powers: his tenor sax, whose phrasing sounds fluid and coherent, is flawlessly accompanied by a rhythmic section which included three young talents of Italian jazz, pianist Marcello Tonolo above all.
Three original compositions, in tune with the soft, relaxed atmosphere so dear to Brink, precede three magnificent interpretations of standards. We then find an excellent yet curious medley which joins the well–known Body and Soul and an equally famous classic of Neapolitan music, Anema e core – two songs that share the title and their being a ballad – but also a pleasant vocal interpretation of What’s New?, which unexpectedly
made us discover a talented crooner, similar to Chet Baker for tone and attack.
