about

Recorded on 10th August 2015, at T.Goulart’s Home Studio, Algarve (Portugal); mixed and mastered by Tuniko Goulart during 2016.

____________________________________________________________________

If you have in mind the electric and very experimental Gileno Santana of «Metamorphosis» (Caligola 2191), you should forget him, almost. The Brazilian trumpeter, still in his late twenties, based in Porto since 2005, has felt the desire to return to dive into the water of the
Amazon River in order to deal with the roots of his music; he is accompanied by guitarist Tuniko Goulart, born in 1967, his compatriot who, before him, had chosen to leave Latin America for Portugal. The duo trumpet–guitar is a formula that in Italy had been brilliantly
pioneered by Irio De Paula with Fabrizio Bosso and Marco Tamburini. The focus is primarily on chorinho, or choro (mourning, crying), the supporting structure of the Brazilian instrumental music, where the guitar plays a key role, a genre born about 150 years ago but still widely practiced today by the younger generation of musicians, who continue to work towards its growth and spread. The album provides us with ten songs, preceded by as many short presentations by Santana, effective, but which give the work an almost didactic flavour, risking to eventually distract the listener. It opens with a funny march (Marchinhas) from the Carnival of Rio and then continues with two virtuous chorinhos, Espinha de Bacalhau, by Severino Araújo (who, according to Gileno Santana is “…the reason for the birth of this project. It all starts here…” ), and Ando preocupado, by Pedroca. The other seven songs are all originals, two by Tuniko – one for guitar (Baião nosso), as well as the rhythmically varied samba of O
errante – and five by Gileno, including the poignant ballad A escolha, the very short Dorme nenén, a gentle lullaby, and the final of Malaco, a playful and dancing choro, almost defiant. Here the trumpeter still displays, if ever proof were needed, his extraordinary instrumental
talent.
