about

Recorded on 25th and 26th February 2020 at RSI, Studio 2, Lugano Besso, Switzerland, by Lara Persia; mixed by Francesco D’Auria and Lara Persia.

At 65 drummer Francesco D’Auria has finally made up in mind to record his first album as leader after playing in the most diverse contexts for decades. The classical studies he completed at the Milan Conservatory, where he’s been teaching jazz percussion and drums since 2016, and the knowledge of contemporary African American music, both mainstream and avant–garde, have certainly made him a drummer as versatile and open–minded as few others today. Influenced among others by German drummer Günter Sommer, whom he has consistently hang around with since 1985, even as a member of Percussion Staff, a percussion instrument–only quintet, in the course of his music career D’Auria has privileged long–lasting collaborations among which we must remember those with guitarist Maurizio Aliffi, recorded on three albums, with trombonist Beppe Caruso, with whom he shared a duo for a long time, but also with Gabriele Mirabassi and Michel Godard, whose rarefied Princess Linde was recorded for this album. Livio Testa wrote in the liner notes: “Even this time Francesco mainly likes to build a relationship based on dialogue; he prefers encouraging the quartet’s members to take part in the ideas he put in place; he chooses to be part of a group rather than ’steal the scene’ in order to state his leadership… “. Testa went on to say: “Even though the line–up constantly changes from solo to duo and finally quartet, it’s always the drummer the one who dictates the timing and provides the motivation and suggestion for the actions of Roberto Cecchetto, Umberto Petrin and Tino Tracanna...”. «Lunatics» sounds like an album articulated yet coherent where D’Auria, despite allowing much freedom to his partners (especially in We Just Want to Be Free and the three other songs played in duo), affirms his focal, catalyzing role even by composing most of the eleven tunes recorded.
