____________________________________________________

This second album as a leader of singer Mara De Mutiis, «Out of tempo», is very far away from the debut «The men I love», recorded with Antonio Ciacca’s American band and published in 2016 by Dodicilune. There were eight well–known standards in that work, each linked to the memory of a master of jazz history; here instead the vocalist from Foggia faces a much more demanding challenge, presenting nine songs new and original, in the lyrics (in Italian) and in the music, confirming her reached full artistic maturity. And, as very rarely happens in the era of “do it yourself”, De Mutiis (with the only exception of The smile of a tear, written entirely by her), has availed herself of the precious help of some friends composers – only two of them, Marco Contardi and Franco Cirillo, are also musicians in this record – who enthusiastically collected the invitation. Silvano Mastromatteo gave her both the music and the lyrics of the refined Un nuovo sole, where the trio is joined by the strings of the Alkemia Quartet. The tune chosen as title for the record was composed by Bruno Tommaso, in whose orchestra Mara sang a few years ago: Out of Tempo is certainly one of the most interesting and articulated tracks, delicate and at the same time rich in rhythmic and harmonic variations, a difficult test for any voice, that the Apulian singer, also strong in classical studies, brilliantly exceeds. From the initial Ciak, dreamy and lyrical, with the highlight of the guitar by Antonio Tosques, to the incisive Bebop for two, imbued with a contagious swing, the album flows away without uncertainties, the result of meticulous teamwork, attentive to every detail, and thus definitely successful.
