«Pater» è il primo disco del duo formato da Ermanno Maria Signorelli e Roberto Martinelli, ma non appare tale, poiché la felice sintesi musicale cui i due musicisti sono qui arrivati è il frutto di una lunga collaborazione e di una comune sensibilità artistica, ma anche di uno stretto e profondo legame umano, rinforzato purtroppo da due tristi eventi, capitati casualmente in un breve arco di tempo, ovvero la scomparsa dei rispettivi padri, cui il lavoro è esplicitamente dedicato.
Il sassofonista toscano è presente sia nell’album in cui Signorelli debutta come leader, «Ad occhi chiusi» (1997), che nel successivo «Attesa» (2000), pubblicati entrambi da Caligola. Ma i due, pur procedendo su percorsi artistici autonomi e paralleli, hanno avuto altre occasioni di incontrarsi, con risultati sempre stimolanti, tanto da rendere urgente e necessaria la documentazione del proficuo lavoro sin qui svolto. Il loro solido e comune background musicale, sia classico che jazzistico, affiora in ogni brano, così come il mirabile interplay e la predilezione per un suono acustico, pulito e naturale. Forme complesse si stemperano nella più totale libertà improvvisativa, ed intuizioni estemporanee vengono elaborate in strutture che rimandano a certa tradizione colta europea. Ci sono rigore, libertà e molta emozione in una musica che sa rispettare il silenzio, spesso assente nel confuso ed assordante ronzio sonoro dei nostri giorni, sottofondo sempre più uniforme, impersonale, alienante, ma soprattutto privo di qualsiasi delicata sfumatura. Sembrano inevitabili i riferimenti al primo Garbarek per Martinelli, ed a Towner per Signorelli, ma vogliamo citare anche Egberto Gismonti, gli Oregon, e quindi Paul McCandless, senza trascurare per questo il loro personale gusto melodico, fortemente radicato nella tradizione italiana, che rende questa musica godibile ed originale. Signorelli è fra i pochi jazzisti ad aver scelto di dedicarsi esclusivamente alla chitarra classica, ed i risultati gli danno pienamente ragione. Da ricordare, insieme alle sette convincenti composizioni originali presenti nel disco, una versione quasi classica, estremamente raffinata e suggestiva, di uno degli standard in tre quarti più eseguiti dai jazzisti, My favourite things.

«Pater» is the first album of the duo formed by Ermanno Maria Signorelli e Roberto Martinelli, though it does not sound so, as the successful musical synthesis here reached by the two musicians comes from a long collaboration and a common artistic sensibility, as well as a tight and deep human bond, unfortunately reinforced by two coincidentally close sad events, the demise of their respective fathers, to whom the work is specifically dedicated.
The Tuscan saxophonist is present both in Signorelli’s debut album as a leader, «Ad occhi chiusi» (1997), and in the following «Attesa» (2000), all published by Caligola. But the two, while proceeding on autonomous and parallel artistic paths, have had other opportunities to meet, with always stimulating results, so much so that the documentation of the fruitful work done so far was urgently needed. Their common and solid musical background, both in classical and in jazz, emerges in every song, as well as the admirable interplay and the predilection for an acoustic, clean and natural sound.
Complex forms are dissolved in utter improvisational freedom, and impromptu intuitions are elaborated in structures that recall a certain European cultured tradition. Rigor, freedom and a lot of emotion coexist in a music respectful of silence, which is often absent in the confused and deafening buzz of our days, a background ever more flat, impersonal, alienating, and without any delicate nuance.
References to the early Jan Garbarek for Martinelli and to Ralph Towner for Signorelli seem inevitable – but Egberto Gismonti, Oregon, and therefore Paul McCandless, must also be mentioned – without neglecting the duo’s personal melodic taste, strongly rooted in the Italian tradition, which makes this music enjoyable and original. Signorelli is one of the few jazz musicians who have chosen to devote themselves exclusively to classical guitar, and the results prove him absolutely right. To be remembered, together with the seven convincing original compositions in the album, is an almost classical, extremely refined and suggestive version of one of the most performed waltz standards in jazz, My favourite things.
