Ottavo lavoro del pianista friulano per Caligola, «Stride Vol. 1» segna anche il ritorno all’amata formula del piano–solo, sette anni dopo «Intermission riff» (altrettanti ne erano passati fra questo ed il precedente «Blue Demon», pubblicato da Splasch). Il “Vol. 1” che completa il titolo del disco sembra però suggerirci che non bisognerà aspettarne altrettanti per la sua prossima prova in solitudine. Insolitamente riflessivo, per certi versi introverso, il nuovo album di Claudio Cojaniz stupirà anche i suoi più fedeli estimatori. Sorprenderà sia per il già citato clima generale, sia per la sempre minore presenza di brani monkiani che per l’inconsueta scelta del repertorio. Se il piano–solo del 2000 era interamente dedicato a Monk, nel successivo album Caligola sono di Sphere solo cinque dei dodici titoli scelti, mentre in «Stride Vol. 1» le sue composizioni si riducono addirittura a tre. All’amata Crepuscole with Nellie si aggiungono la meno nota Ugly beauty e l’ennesima ripresa di ‘Round Midnight (si rivela interessante il confronto fra questa interpretazione, più intima e crepuscolare, e quella presente in «Intermission riff»). Sorprendente è soprattutto il brano scelto per l’apertura, In a mist, capolavoro di Bix Beiderbecke pressoché dimenticato dai pianisti moderni, a cui questa versione di Cojaniz restituirà certamente attenzione. Se il brano di Bix è un inevitabile richiamo allo “stride” del titolo, non possono sorprendere né Malaika, ennesimo atto d’amore verso l’Africa, né l’originale interpretazione in chiave blues di Goodbye pork pie hat. Colpiscono di più invece una rilassata rivisitazione di I remember Clifford, la riscoperta del poco eseguito Theme for Ernie ma soprattutto una struggente When I fall in love, questa sì davvero sorprendente. L’arrivederci, quanto mai dolce, ci viene dato dall’unica sua composizione, Erika. Si chiude così, nel migliore dei modi, un disco che conferma Claudio Cojaniz pianista di punta del panorama jazzistico europeo.

Eighth Cd for Caligola by the Friulian pianist, «Stride Vol. 1» also marks the return to the beloved piano–solo, seven years after «Intermission riff» (just as many had passed between this work and the previous «Blue Demon», published by Splasch). The “Vol. 1″ which completes the album title seems to suggest that we will not have to wait just as many years for his next solo record. Unusually thoughtful, somewhat introverted, the new album by Claudio Cojaniz will astonish even his most faithful supporters. It will surprise for the already mentioned general atmosphere, for the decreasing presence of Monk’s tunes and for the unusual choice of the repertoire. While the first piano–solo of 2000 was entirely devoted to Monk, in the following Caligola album only five of the twelve chosen themes are Sphere’s, while in «Stride Vol. 1» his compositions are reduced to three. To the beloved Crepuscole with Nellie are added the less known Ugly beauty and yet another take of ‘Round midnight (the comparison becomes interesting between this interpretation, more intimate and faint, and the one in «Intermission riff»). Surprisingly the tune chosen for the opening is In a mist, a masterpiece by Bix Beiderbecke almost forgotten by modern pianists, to which this version by Cojaniz will certainly bring back some attention. If Bix’s composition is an inevitable reminder of the “stride” in the title, nor Malaika, yet another act of love towards Africa, or the original interpretation of Goodbye pork pie hat in a blues key, can be surprising. Instead, what strikes us the most are the relaxed reinterpretation of I remember Clifford, the rediscovery of the rarely performed Theme for Ernie, but especially a poignant When I fall in love, this one surprising for real. The farewell, sweet as ever, is given us by his only original composition, Erika. Thus ends, in the best way, an album that confirms Claudio Cojaniz as a leading pianist in the European jazz scene.
