about

Recorded and edited in November 2022 at Stone Soup Studios, Maumee, by Eric Sills; mixed and mastered at Bass Hit Studio, New York, by Dave Darlington
Margherita Fava, a talented young pianist, recorded an album that forges a deep emotional connection with the listener by expertly mingling the experience of a saxophonist like Gregory Tardy with the freshness of the bass–and–drum team of Javier Enrique and Michael J Reed, her fellow students. Born in Follina (Treviso) in 1995 into a family of classical musicians, she started piano lessons at 10 and took up electric bass as an adolescent. In 2013 she enrolled in a summer jazz program organized by New York’s New School in Italy and it introduced her to a completely new world, jazz, and especially Miles Miles whose solo in So What she learned by ear. “That experience was the most exciting thing that had happened to me up to then, the pianist confesses, and on that day I decided what I’d do the rest of my life”. Her desire to deepen her knowledge of the African–American roots of jazz brought her to Michigan State University on a scholarship and, once there, she came into the orbit of charismatic bassist Rodney Whitaker who then produced her debut album. After her degree she earned a master’s degree at the University of Tennessee, where she studied piano under Eric Reed and composition with Tardy. She currently teaches at Cleveland’s Lee University. «Tatatu» consists of six originals, a tribute to Monk and a personal interpretation of Jerome Kern’s classic All the Things You Are. The album is a sort of journey through different landscapes which share a common denominator, that is a pronounced taste for melody both when it has to do with the obstinate bassline in Resilience and the complex rhythmic pattern of A Restless Mind or the sinuous elegance of Tidal Waves. Margherita Fava has been inspired by various musicians, from Herbie Hancock to Red Garland, from Wayne Shorter to Roy Hargrove, just to mention a few, but such influences never overshadow her personality and the album’s signature style where every element always keeps a lyrical, singable trait.
