After brilliant studies at the Rovigo Conservatory of Music under Marco Tamburini and Stefano Senni, and an intense as well as successful career spanning not only jazz, but also genres close to it like blues, folk and pop, double bass player Marco Vavassori – born in 1988 in Jesolo (Venezia) – has finally released his first album as a leader. He gathered sensitive, experienced friend–musicians in a quartet which may look conventional were it not for the surprising, incisive clarinet played by Michele Uliana that takes the place the saxophone has in similar line–ups. The band is completed by creative drummer Enrico Smiderle, the leader’s fellow student in Rovigo, and the equally young, but much mature pianist Alberto Lincetto, who boasts a much larger discography than his colleagues despite his age. Vavassori’s music – he composed all the eight tunes on the album – sounds fresh, never banal, and has caught our attention straight away, even when it employs conventional genres like blues, modern bop and modal jazz. It is especially characterized by care and emotional tension that never fades in the eight tracks on «Walking with Bob», from Hocking, the lyrical and solar opening track based almost entirely on major chords, to the blues of J. Be Blues, a heartfelt tribute to the father of all double bass players: Jimmy Blanton, a revolutionary yet often forgotten genius who died too young. It will be extremely pleasant for the listener to be carried away by the quartet’s music moving from the singable themes of Sognando and Kurkuma, imbued with Mediterranean and Balkan folklore, to the obstinate modular pedal of Shukran, but also from the mesmerizing Hare, where double bass and piano brilliantly support the soloing of the drums and clarinet, to the joyful and dancing Francesco’s smile, the track that closes the album with a breadth of contagious, genuine joy.
