Tre anni dopo «Dall’altra parte dell’Adriatico» (Caligola 2114), disco del
debutto di questo ben assortito trio italo–croato, si rafforza l’idea dei
“ponti culturali”, frutto dell’incontro tra i fermenti che animano le due
diverse sponde dell’Adriatico. Si conferma sempre più leader del Black
Coffee il marchigiano Daniele Di Bonaventura, da anni brillante
protagonista del jazz italiano, la cui fama si è di recente allargata con la
partecipazione al progetto di Paolo Fresu «Mistico Mediterraneo»,
pubblicato dall’Ecm di Manfred Eicher. Di Bonaventura – e lo dimostra
tanto più in questo trio – non è soltanto uno straordinario specialista del
bandoneon ma anche – non ci stancheremo mai di ripeterlo – un
originale pianista, forte di un naturale e coinvolgente lirismo, mai
ridondante. Se a questo aggiungiamo il suo non comune talento
compositivo, ecco che i motivi di interesse per questo secondo lavoro di
Black Coffee, «Adagio», non mancano. Qui il Nostro regala anche alla
cantante di origini haitiane Martine Thomas – nata a New York ma da
qualche anno trasferitasi a Zara – una suggestiva Cultus via Haiti in cui
suona, come nei due precedenti titoli, di sapore fortemente etnico, il
bandoneon. Ma ci piace egualmente ricordarlo pianista pregnante ed
efficace, nelle toccanti ma asciutte interpretazioni di Santa Lucia e
Reginella campagnola, due grandi classici della canzone napoletana,
così come nel suo Movimento, brano cantabile dal sapore vagamente
jarrettiano. Riuscitissime anche le interpretazioni al bandoneon di Io
canto, un’altra sua composizione dall’andamento danzante, ricca di echi
folklorici, e del suggestivo Waltz for Ruth, celebre ballad di Charlie
Haden (dedicata alla moglie). Co–leader del trio e suo vero promotore è
il bassista Renato Svorinic, di Zara, che anche in quest’occasione
presenta due suoi originali arrangiamenti di brani tradizionali dalmati,
Evo san ti dosa, e Izresla ruza rumena, quest’ultimo reso ancor più
interessante dalla partecipazione di tre efficaci vocalist croate. Un
progetto, per concludere, davvero interessante, ma che ha forse,
proprio nella breve rilettura del celebre Adagio di Albinoni, scelto per di
più come titolo dell’album, l’episodio meno avvincente.

Three years after «Dall’altra parte dell’Adriatico» (Caligola 2114), debut
album of this widely assorted Italian–Croatian trio, the idea of a “cultural
bridge” is much more supported, strengthened first by the encounter of
the two edges of the Adriatic Sea. The real leader of Black Coffee is
Daniele Di Bonaventura, from Marche, who has been a great
protagonist of the Italian jazz scene for many years, whose fame has
recently risen due to his participation to Paolo Fresu’s project «Mistico
Mediterraneo», released by Manfred Eicher’s Ecm. Di Bonaventura –
showing even more so with this trio – that he isn’t only a bandoneon
virtuoso but also – we’ll never get tired of repeating it – an original
pianist, filled with natural and absorbing and never redundant lyricism. If
to this we add his unusual composing talent, we can see why the
interest in his second work, Black Coffee’s «Adagio», is strong. In this
album he gifts to the Haitian singer Martine Thomas (born in New York,
but recently moved to Zara), a suggestive Cultus via Haiti, in which he
plays, as in the prior two tunes, with a distinct ethnic flavor, the
bandoneon. We also like to remember him as an incisive and fertile
pianist, in his touching but essential interpretations of Santa
Lucia and Reginella campagnola, two great classics of Neapolitan
Song, the same applies to his Movimento, a singable tune with a hint of
Keith Jarrett’s style. His interpretations with bandoneon of Io canto,
another one of his dancing compositions, rich of folkloric echoes, and of
the suggestive Waltz for Ruth, famous ballad of Charlie Haden
(dedicated to his wife). Co–leader and great promoter of the trio is the
bass player Renato Svorinic, from Zara, that also in this album offers
two of his original arrangements of Dalmatian traditional music, Evo san
ti dosa and Izresla ruza rumena, the last made more interesting by the
participation of three wonderful Croatian vocalists. This beautiful project
seems to be a less captive chapter just in the short quotation of
Albinoni’s Adagio, chosen as Cd title
