about

Recorded at Verona, on 9th February 2012, by Roberto Cetoli.

Carmichael,
popolare, come Riverboat Shuffle , Rockin’ Chair , Washboard Blues,
Skylark, The nearness of you, Georgia on My Mind e Lazy River.
sposo” (Here comes the groom), con Bing Crosby. Tutti i brani sopra
familiari, negli Stati Uniti.

________________________________________________________

Born in Indiana like the trumpeter J Kyle Gregory, Hoagy Carmichael
(1899–1981) is one of the most important American composers in
popular music. He was one of the first authors to be included in the
“Songwriters Hall of Fame”, founded in 1969 by Johnny Mercer.
Carmichael graduated in law in 1926. Only after the great success
of Stardust (1927) he decided to devote himself to music full time.
Between the ‘20s and the ‘40s he wrote songs that have built the
popular music history, such as Riverboat Shuffle, Rockin’ Chair, Skylark,
The nearness of you, Georgia on My Mind and Lazy River. In 1951 he
won the Oscar for best original song with In the cool, cool, cool of the
evening, which was featured in Frank Capra’s film «Here comes the
groom», with Bing Crosby. All the songs referred to above have been
selected by Paolo Birro and Kyle Gregory for this delicate and heart–felt
homage to the great American composer. Paolo and Kyle’s duo isn’t an
improvised one. It has its roots in their common work with the Riccardo
Brazzale’s Lydian Sound Orchestra, and culminates in this wonderful
live recording, realised a little before the trumpeter decided to go back
to live in the USA, for family reasons. In this context, the liner notes
written by Kyle’s father, Jerry Gregory, look suitable. Jerry plays on the
concept of belonging to the “hoosier” community (which refers to the
inhabitants of the State of Indiana), and writes: “Hoagy has shared the
campus of the University of Indiana with Kyle, our trumpeter, even if six
decades before. The versatile style of Carmichael is punctuated with
Kyle’s fiery blasts. Paolo lends a mild melancholy to the recording with
his piano. This duo so variously matched – Indiana and Italy – enhancesthe extraordinary variety of Hoagy’s music”. Their music is a refined andintense jazz, dripping with joyful lyricism. Here improvisation, while largely free, never abandons completely the harmonic and melodic outline of the songs played, preserving their precious beauty. This is something that is usually achieved only by the most sensitive and experienced jazz players, a category surely including Gregory and Birro.
