All compositions by Claudio Cojaniz.
Recorded in May/June and analogic mastered in October at Digitalsound Studio, Vedelago (Treviso), by Walter Bertolo;
mixed in September 2022 by Franco Feruglio in Udine.
For his seventeenth Caligola album – the first one, «War Orphans», dates back to 2004 – Claudio Cojaniz, who had been collaborating with the experienced bass–and–drum team of Alessandro Turchet and Luca Colussi on five albums since 2010, unexpectedly decided to replace them. Perhaps he was seeking new inspiration and harmony and found two equally talented musicians, double–bass player Mattia Magatelli and drummer Carmelo Graceffa. After the hypnotic lyricism of the captivating opening song, Jardin des pluies, the double bass carved out a magnificent solo at the beginning of the second track – the perfect prologue to the singable melody of Martin Fierro, a melody both nostalgic and evocative. The playing style of Claudio Cojaniz – who turned seventy and lost no ounce of his freshness – has long been well–defined, instantly recognizable from the very first notes and remains unrivaled in the rich Italian jazz scene. It is poetry put to music what the pianist from Friuli gifts us with. Just as in his previous albums one can recognize some key features of his style; from the African, tender and immersive echoes that inevitably recall Abdullah Ibrahim and that we find in Umphefumulo Wase – Afrika to the afro-blues nuances of Duende, where Ornette Coleman’s music is evoked and Graceffa’s creative drumming is given ample freedom. Red Line pays a heartfelt tribute to a never forgotten master like Thelonious Monk and lets Magatelli’s throbbing, deep bass shine, while the two piano solos – the pensive, heartfelt Mon Amour “A.” and the livelier, almost danceable Ola de fuerza – were carefully sequenced in the middle and at the end of the album respectively and portray an often overlooked pianist–composer whose generous, honest discography deserves a prominent position in the contemporary jazz scene. And «Black» – a title as brief and meaningful as the previous one, «Orfani» – is the umpteenth magnificent proof.

Powerful playing on this album! Wow Alexi is killing it with Herbie Hancock sensibilities!!! This is a tight-knit trio and add Verneri Pohjola on trumpet to the mix and you have one hell of a recording. Man, I ordered the vinyl and looking forward to giving this one repeated spins. Rob O.

Difficult to name a favourite track, however if I was forced to choose an all time favourite album this would certainly be up there at the top. I'm in the UK but it was a friend in South Africa that introduced me to Gondwana. Absolutely beautiful album from start to finish, amazing musicians and composition both. Thank you, it inspires me to become a better musician. rai scott
