Il trio come forma espressiva unitaria e paritetica continua a segnare
l’interessante percorso musicale del contrabbassista Roberto Caon,
classe 1961, che tre anni dopo «Slash Art 3» torna a pubblicare per
Caligola un altro riuscito lavoro, ed anche in questo caso titolo del disco
e nome del gruppo coincidono, «Three Open Rooms». Se identico è il
batterista, Marco Carlesso, sottile e raffinato, davvero ideale per questo
tipo di musica, sussurrata e mai gridata, diverso è invece il pianista
scelto per condividere la nuova avventura. Lì c’era il meno noto ma
egualmente funzionale Marco Ponchiroli, qui il più famoso Stefano
Battaglia, artista Ecm che non ha certo bisogno di presentazioni. Come
con Slash – lì però il lavoro bruscamente s’interruppe – anche quest’incisione è solo una tappa di un processo creativo che parte da
lontano ma in questo caso, per nostra fortuna, sta ancora continuando.
Molti sanno che Battaglia è uno degli storici docenti di Siena Jazz, dove
da tempo conduce dei laboratori permanenti di musica d’insieme, che
spesso producono sorprendenti risultati. La coppia ritmica veneta ha
lavorato – e continua a farlo – con Stefano Battaglia dal 2008,
incontrandosi circa una volta al mese, ed il materiale su cui si sono
esercitati nel corso del 2009, interamente frutto della penna di Caon, è
talmente piaciuto al “maestro” che, allorché gli è stato chiesto, non ha
esitato a registrarlo e ad eseguirlo qualche volta dal vivo. Come però
spesso succede, quando un leader dalla spiccata personalità si mette al
servizio di un altro musicista – con l’umiltà che hanno solo i maestri –
cambia un poco anche il suo orizzonte espressivo. L’incontro di
Battaglia con il jazz più fisico e sanguigno di Caon ci fa assaporare un
“nuovo” e sempre splendido pianista, molto vicino a quello delle origini,
meno cerebrale forse, ma non per questo meno profondo. Un’iniezione
di vitale creatività che fa bene alle nostre orecchie. Ce lo indicano subito la lirica e profonda Norway’s song, introdotta dalla sontuosa cavata del contrabbasso del leader, ma anche la lunga The sad bull, di sapore jarrettiano, così come il toccante omaggio a Joe Zawinul, ricordato da Roberto Caon con sincero affetto nel penultimo brano dell’album.

The trio as an unitary and equal expressive form continues to
characterize the interesting musical evolution of the double bass player
Roberto Caon, born in 1961, who releases another successful album for
Caligola, three years after «Slash Art 3». Also in this case the title of the
Cd and the name of the band are the same, «Three Open Rooms». If
the drummer is the same one, Marco Carlesso, who is subtle and
refined, really ideal for this kind of music, whispered and never shouted,
on the contrary the pianist chosen to share this new adventure is a
different one. There he was the less known but equally functional Marco
Ponchiroli, here the more famous Stefano Battaglia, an Ecm artist that
surely doesn’t need any introduction. Like with Slash – in that case the
work was suddenly interrupted – also this album is only a stage in a
creative process that had started long ago but is still continuing, luckily
for us. Many know that Battaglia is a historical teacher of Siena Jazz,
where he has been running for some time Ensemble Music
Laboratories, with permanent groups, which often produce amazing
results. Roberto and Marco, both from Veneto, have been working with
him since 2008, meeting up once a month. Battaglia liked so much what
they played during 2009, entirely created by Caon that, once asked, he
accepted to record and play live that music without hesitation. However,
like it often happens, when a leader with a strong personality places
himself at another musician’s disposal – with the humility that only
masters show – even his expressive horizon changes a bit. The meeting of Battaglia with the more physical and full–blooded jazz of Caon makes us taste a “new” and always wonderful pianist, very close to the origins’ one, maybe less cerebral but not less deep. This Cd is an injection of vital creativity that benefits our ears. This is immediately highlighted by the lyrical and deep Norway’s song, introduced by the sumptuous touch of the leader’s double bass, but also by the long The sad bull, influenced by Keith Jarrett, and the touching homage to Joe Zawinul, remembered by Roberto Caon with sincere affection in the penultimate tune of the album.
