“…. ho cominciato dalla classica, ma essendo mio padre appassionato di blues e musica brasiliana, mi sono avvicinata molto giovane ad altre musiche; ho lasciato presto la musica classica, che ho invece ripreso in modo intenso dopo il mio primo disco …. sentivo che volevo di più dal pianoforte, volevo una consapevolezza maggiore del suono e delle possibilità dello strumento, che a mio avviso solo la classica può fornire .… averla studiata così a fondo paradossalmente mi ha avvicinata molto di più al jazz”. Il primo disco da leader di Aisha Ruggieri è «A–Simmetry» (2005) registrato a New York in trio con Paul Gill e Joe Strasser, cui sono seguiti «Faces» (2007) con il Gas Trio (Silvia Bolognesi, Giovanni Gullino), e «Playing Bacharach» (2009), in quartetto con Gianluca Carollo, Edu Hebling, Mauro Beggio. Si è quindi presa, ma solo discograficamente, una lunga pausa di riflessione la pianista padovana, se ci sono voluti sei anni perché tornasse a far parlare di sé con un nuovo lavoro a suo nome; tanto tempo non è però
passato invano se i risultati sono quelli di questo atteso e sorprendente «Southlitude», disco che non chiude solo un proficuo periodo di ricerca, ma apre al talento della Ruggieri nuovi suggestivi orizzonti, frutto di una pluralità di ispirazioni, dal rock alla classica (East), dal tango (Due), al jazz latino o modale, con una varietà di colori cui contribuiscono sia la scelta di affiancare al pianoforte le tastiere, sia l’aggiunta del percussionista cubano Antonio José Molinas. Risulta dolce lasciarsi
avvolgere dalle sognanti atmosfere di Posada mood, dall’intimo caldo lirismo di Afrodita’s dinner, ma anche avvincere dal sincero e riuscito omaggio ai Led Zeppelin di Black dog, intriso di suggestioni davisiane così come North, il cui ipnotico crescendo offre interessanti spunti alla
tromba di Gianluca Carollo, unico rimasto del precedente gruppo, che insieme al solido contrabbasso di Lorenzo Calgaro (prezioso anche il suo lavoro in studio) è pedina indispensabile di una formazione solida ed affiatata.

“… I started from classical music, but my father being fond of blues and Brazilian music, I approached other sounds when I was very young; I soon left classical music, which I resumed intensively after my first album… I felt that I wanted more from the piano, I wanted a greater
awareness of the sound and the possibilities of the instrument, which I believe only classical music can provide… having studied it so thoroughly has ironically drawn me much nearer to jazz”. The first album of Aisha Ruggieri as a leader is «A–Simmetry» (2005), recorded in New York in trio with Paul Gill and Joe Strasser, which was followed by «Faces» (2007) with the Gas Trio (Silvia Bolognesi and Giovanni Gullino), and «Playing Bacharach» (2009), in quartet with Gianluca Carollo, Edu Hebling, Mauro Beggio. The Paduan pianist has taken, but only music–wise, a long time to reflect, if it took her six years to be talked about again with a new work; much time wasn’t spent in vain, however, if the results are those in this anticipated and surprising
«Southlitude»; this album not only closes a fruitful period of research, but opens new evocative horizons to the talent of Aisha Ruggieri, that is a result of a plurality of inspirations, from rock to classical music (East), from tango (Two) to the Latin or modal jazz, with a variety of colours
generated by both the choice of complementing the acoustic piano with keyboards and the addition of the Cuban percussionist Antonio José Molinas. It is sweet to be surrounded by the dreamy atmosphere of Posada Mood, by the deep, warm lyricism of Afrodita’s dinner, but also
captivated by the sincere and successful tribute to Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog (Led), drenched in Miles Davis suggestions as well as North, whose hypnotic crescendo offers interesting insights to the trumpet of Gianluca Carollo, the only one left of the previous group, who, along with the solid bass of Lorenzo Calgaro (his studio work is also precious), is an essential piece of a strong and close–knit band.
