about

Live recorded in May 2021 at Canavese Pianoforti Atelier, Toirano (Savona); mixed and mastered at Mazzi Factory Studio in 2022; sound engineer Alessandro Mazzitelli. The well-established duo from Liguria consisting of bassist Dino Cerruti and drummer Rodolfo Cervetto – who gifted us with the excellent «Melodies» (Caligola 2259), recorded with Andrea Pozza and Giampaolo Casati, a little more than three years ago – is now playing with a young pianist who shows great promise: Tommaso Perazzo. Born in 1996 and hailing from Varese, Perazzo grew musically in Genoa and perfected at the Manhattan School of Music in New York after studying at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He’s an up–and– coming musician to be fully discovered. It must have been quite an amazing discovery for those who didn’t get to know him before! We are before the most typical jazz piano trio of the “white school” that follows in the footsteps of Bill Evans and what he established sixty years ago, which was then perfected by Chick Corea first and Brad Mehldau after, always with great swing. Recorded live but with no audience, with a magnificent Steinway grand piano and that spontaneity and immediacy typical of jazz, even contemporary jazz, the album consists of ten enjoyable tracks. Four of them are original tracks equally divided between Cerutti e Perazzo, but there’s also a nice composition by pianist Riccardo Zegna, a master of Ligurian jazz, and five standards. Two of those standards come from the modern repertoire and are fruit of two masters who built successful long–lasting collaborations like Ornette Coleman – When Will the Blues Live? was composed by him – and Don Cherry, who composed the gorgeous Art Deco. The fresh approach to improvisation, as well as the trio’s constant search for melodiousness and interplay help overlook a few, however slight, imperfections that didn’t prevent some live albums becoming milestones in music despite happening in concerts
