È finalmente disponibile, dopo esser rimasto troppi anni nel cassetto, questo splendido lavoro di Enzo Favata. Registrato nel 2011 da Stefano Amerio, è stato editato e masterizzato otto anni dopo, ma la pandemia ne ha rallentato l’uscita. Affascinato dalla figura di Garibaldi e ispirato da un libro trovato nel 2008, durante un tour in Brasile, il sassofonista di Alghero ha quindi deciso di dedicare all’eroe dei due mondi un progetto musicale che prevedeva anche la lettura di alcuni testi da parte di Enedina Sanna. Dopo aver debuttato nel 2010 al festival “Musica sulle Bocche”, il progetto ha girato il nostro paese nel 2011, per il 150° anniversario dell’unità d’Italia, ed è poi stato registrato in studio. Quello messo insieme da Favata è un ensemble davvero atipico e originale, che unisce nella propria musica il piglio deciso di marce e inni, il lirismo, le ispirazioni etniche sudamericane e nostrane, l’improvvisazione del jazz più libero. La musica di «O Caminhos de Garibaldi» non risente affatto dell’usura del tempo, appare ancora fresca, attuale e coinvolgente. Merito della creatività di Favata, che si conferma superbo ideatore di progetti, ma anche dei raffinati arrangiamenti di Alfonso Santimone. Encomiabile il loro lavoro, sia nel tema lirico di Anita che nei momenti in cui si toccano tradizioni musicali diverse: quelle latinoamericane in Boa Tarde e in Habanera do Rio Grande; quella sarda in Milazzo; quella classica in Pensando que va, rielaborazione del verdiano Va pensiero; quelle popolari, presenti sia nel ricorrente leitmotiv di Addio mia bella addio che in La corsicana garibaldina o nell’Inno di Garibaldi. Il tutto avviene sempre all’insegna dell’equilibrio e della coerenza, anche per l’insolita presenza di due tromboni diversi e complementari: quelli del veterano Giancarlo Schiaffini, maestro dell’improvvisazione, e del giovane Filippo Vignato, che qui si affacciava alla ribalta del jazz. La linea dei fiati è completata dalla tromba di Flavio Davanzo e, naturalmente, dalle ance di Favata, che alterna sax soprano, tenore e clarinetto basso, prendendosi i giusti spazi solistici senza tuttavia voler mai primeggiare; preziosa qualità per il leader di un progetto che trova la sua forza nella sinergia del collettivo. L’eccellente coppia ritmica formata da Danilo Gallo ed U.T. Gandhi asseconda nel migliore dei modi il fantasioso pianoforte di Santimone. Da ascoltare tutto d’un fiato!

This great album by Enzo Favata is finally available after spending too many years tucked away. Recorded in 2011 by Stefano Amerio, it was edited and mixed eight years later but the pandemic delayed its release. Fascinated by Garibaldi and inspired by a book he found during a tour in Brazil in 2008, the saxophonist from Alghero decided to dedicate a musical project, which also involved Enedina Sanna reading a few texts, to the Hero of the Two Worlds. After debuting at the “Musica sulle Bocche” festival in 2010, the project toured our country in 2011 for the Italian unification’s 150th anniversary and was then recorded in Artesuono studio. Favata put together an unusual, original ensemble whose music combines the resolute tone of marches and hymns, lyricism, Latin American and local inspirations, the improvisation of the freest jazz. «Os Caminhos de Garibaldi»’s music was not affected by the passing of time and still sounds fresh, contemporary and captivating. Favata, who proves to be an excellent project creator, gets credit for his inventiveness and so does Alfonso Santimone for his refined arrangements. Their work is commendable both in Anita’s theme and in the moments where different music traditions are clear inspirations: Latin American in Boa Tarde and Habanera do Rio Grande, Sardinian in Milazzo, classical in Pensando que va, an interpretation of Verdi’s Va Pensiero, but also popular traditions that one can hear in the recurring leitmotiv of Addio mia bella addio, La Corsicana garibaldina or in Inno di Garibaldi. Everything is done with balance and consistency because of the unusual combination of two trombones as different as they are collateral: the one played by the veteran master of improvisation Giancarlo Schiaffini and the one played by Filippo Vignato, who was just coming into the jazz limelight at the time. Flavio Davanzo’s trumpet and Favata, of course, who alternates soprano and tenor sax, plus bass clarinet, complement the woodwind section. He performs his solo parts without wanting to outshine his fellow musicians; it is such a precious quality for the leader of a project whose strength lies in the ensemble’s synergy. The excellent bass–and–drum team consisting of Danilo Gallo and U.T. Gandhi supports Santimone’s creative piano in the best possible way. That is an album to listen to in one go!
