about

Recorded in November 2015 by Luca Pestarini, at M.Barbiero’s Home Studio, Ivrea; mixed and mastered in February 2016 by Stefano Amerio, at Artesuono Recording Studios, Cavalicco (Udine).

______________________________________________________

This is the fifth album as a leader by Maurizio Brunod released on our label, after the one in duo with Garrison Fewell: «Extrema ratio» documents the recent and discographically new encounter between three well–known musicians and improvisers of the Italian jazz scene.
They share, as well as the frequentation of the avant–garde (Barbiero and Brunod were companions in many evocative musical journeys), a strong propensity for risk and contamination, but also a natural and sincere distaste for music genres, which mainly in this case would appear misleading and unable to represent an extremely creative and omnivorous music. All the thirteen tracks, including five co–signed, are the result of a sort of collective construction and probably chosen last minute, or just before the recording session, and form a smooth and consistent sequence, as episodes of a long suite. But, in addition to the successful original compositions (other three have a single signature, two by Gallo – close to the Guano Padano’s mood – and one by Barbiero, a short percussive interlude that gives the title track, other tracks deserve to be reported: an intense version of Our Spanish love song by Charlie Haden – a long way from that proposed by the composer with Pat Metheny – and the dreamy blues K, by saxophonist Chris Speed. There is also a triple version of the folk song Reine (the first psychedelic, the second more classical and the third nearly “acid” and very “free”), but the songs composed by the trio, more informal and free, almost visionary, are the ones which highlight the different but complementary sources of inspiration of the three talented jazzmen, protagonists of a very successful encounter, that we hope will be continued.
