about

Recorded at Chiaverano and Clavesana (Torino), from February to April 2012,
by Elvin Betti, Nicola Cattaneo and Andrea Luciano; mixed by Elvin Betti and Maurizio Brunod.

Claudio Lodati, come lui chitarrista, qui viene sviluppata insieme a ben

Maurizio Brunod ‘s third album is with Caligola label again. In it he
develops even more his beloved formula of the dialogue for two voices.
However, differently from his previous recording, «Reunion», in which
his only partner was Claudio Lodati, a guitarist like him, here the
language of duo is developed with five musicians, from a long–time
friend like Massimo Barbiero – who plays marimba here – to a master
as Miroslav Vitous (among their five songs we’d like to mention
especially Dreams come true and Waltz for Joe), who did all he could
for the progress of European jazz. Brunod tells this about his meeting
with the famous double bass player: “Vitous has been one of my
greatest idols; we met thanks to the Eurojazz Festival of Ivrea. Since
then our ways crossed several times. We have often talked about
playing together until I decided to ask him directly. Why not?, he
answered”. But in «Duets», the Piedmontese guitarist holds a dialogue
also with Achille Succi’s alto sax and flute (in La foresta di bambù), with
Daniele Di Bonaventura’s bandoneon, which is nearly an organ in the
striking opening tune, First flight, and with Danilo Gallo’s bass, both the
acoustic and the electric one. Together with Danilo’s bass the leader’s
guitar tinges with country–western suggestions, both in Grand
Canyon and in El Gallo Sanchez. Brunod and his partners have
composed sixteen of the seventeen songs of the album; the only
exception being the sad A fala da paixao, by Egberto Gismonti. Thus Di
Bonaventura’s bandoneon not only opens but also closes the record,
which represents a remarkable and convincing proof of the maturity of
its author.
