rvss.eel This walks many fine lines for me and manages to stay within all of them, which makes it a truly unique album in my collection. The two styles here mesh perfectly (are there only two? I don't know really know). Jazz albums with vocals are always a no for me, but Baba's voice is the perfect compliment, and is never over done. Paris Bamako Jazz is a vibe, and if once a year I can host a summer party with this music to match, I will be a happy person. And my friends would probably like me better! Favorite track: Paris Bamako Jazz.

about

Recorded on 10th May 2022 at Jean–Philippe Rykiel Recording Studio, Paris, France; mixed and mastered in December 2022 at KayaStudio, Quattromiglia (Cosenza), Italy, by Francesco Malizia.
One year and a half after the fruitful recording session in Paris in September 2020 which resulted in «Griot Jazz», an album that captivated all world music enthusiasts, and not only in Europe, two of the four musicians who took part in it – Malian–born, adopted Calabrian Baba Sissoko and French keyboardist Jean–Philippe Rykiel – returned to the same studio and in the course of an afternoon let their contagious creativity run free. Nothing had been planned. The music of «Paris Bamako Jazz», partly sung and partly instrumental, flowed spontaneously but conveys serenity and warmth to those who listen to it. It’s a sort of dialogue between old friends who meet again after a long time and quickly becomes an intimate, friendly conversation as if to resume a dialogue too soon interrupted. The vibe is that of a “live” recording where improvisation plays an important part. Sissoko plays a wide array of instruments, while Rykiel moves from the piano to the keyboard and the Rhodes piano and always provides a solid support to the African griot’s melodic lines and encourages him to give his best. The album consists of eleven tracks that flow smoothly and coherently like parts of a suite with neither glitches, nor decrease in energy. It’s an album to be listened to seamlessly, from beginning to end. It’s hard to rank the songs by merit: each one of them is the rich, juicy fruit of a common effort, but it’s worth mentioning the title–track at least. Quoting a legendary recording by Don Cherry, Rykiel and Sissoko are bond by a “complete communion” resulting from mutual respect and the will to spread peace, joy, love for music and life. This is the fifth album that Baba Sissoko releases with our label, and we are really happy that this fruitful collaboration continues in the coming years too.
