Historical Tapes ℗1988–2020

Two years after «Bruno Marini 4», the saxophonist from Verona proves to have achieved mastery of his instrument and a musical maturity which enable him to face a tougher challenge successfully: playing in a trio with no harmonic instrument. This record (now Cd) was published only as Lp and unfindable for a long time. Here the rhythm section is not the same as the one on the first album, but is worthy of the situation and gives a proper support to the solo flights of the leader; if necessary, it also inspires him by giving him original ideas.
Differently from what one might think, the lack of a piano doesn’t take the music off on a tangent toward avant-garde, but creates a cozy and refined atmosphere which recalls the one created in the early Fifties by Gerry Mulligan Quartet. It is not accidental that the only two original tunes on the album, the nocturnal blues of Blue Mob and the swinging All the Things You Could Be are clearly inspired by that band. Charlie Cinelli and Alberto Olivieri, like Marini children of the fertile jazz scene of Verona of the Eighties, contributed to the success of this record, which is still appreciated for its originality and freshness.
Thanks to this release on Cd, a previously unreleased song was brought to light. It’s a pleasant version of The Lady is a Tramp, which obviously recalls the “Mulligan model”. With «Love Me or Leave Me», his second album as leader, Bruno Marini managed “to amaze two long–time friends like us, because he is a gambler willing to deal with multiple strategies and even come up with new ones: most of all he doesn’t forget that games, just like music, must please people”. This is part of the liner notes written in 1988 by Pietro Tonolo and Piero Leveratto, two musicians who grew up and blossomed like Marini in the Eighties, a decade which turned out to be extremely important for the development and popularity of Italian jazz in the world.
