Groove & Move sono Pasquale Mirra e Gabriele Mitelli, musicisti che non hanno certo bisogno di presentazioni, molto attivi sul fronte del nuovo jazz italiano, da qualche anno in più il vibrafonista, ma con altrettanta caparbietà e talento il più giovane trombettista. Dopo moltissimi concerti era giunto dunque il momento di fissare i già preziosi risultati raggiunti da un duo che non ha nessuna intenzione di fermarsi qui, perché è ancora lunga la strada da percorrere, ed altrettanto gustosi potrebbero essere i frutti della prossima raccolta. I nove brani di «Water stress» hanno le sembianze di un’unica lunga suite (non a caso i pezzi sono editati senza la consueta pausa), viaggio avvincente ed onirico lungo le infinite possibilità offerte dall’interazione dei numerosi strumenti suonati dai due musicisti, senza mai farsi tentare da un sin troppo lezioso e facile (per strumentisti della loro caratura) virtuosismo, ed invece alla ricerca della purezza di una poesia che vuole coinvolgere le persone che incontra, non segnare distanze. Una musica, la loro, che cerca di riabituarci a farsi sorprendere, a farsi cogliere impreparati per potersi quindi stupire, un po’ come succede ai bambini. Anche la scelta di inserire riletture di Paul Motian, Charles Mingus, Carla Bley e Abdullah Ibrahim (Namhanje è un brano tradizionale riarrangiato dal pianista sudafricano in un album storico, «Echoes from Africa») accanto a cinque composizioni originali si dimostra azzeccata, non togliendo coerenza né fluidità a quest’originale lavoro. Sembrano cogliere nel segno le parole spese per il duo da Vincenzo Roggero (All About Jazz): “… la musica è densa, sinuosa, avvolgente, con richiami ancestrali alla purezza del suono e della melodia, con accidenti e minime deviazioni che, lungi dall'infrangere la continuità del flusso sonoro, ne amplificano semmai la ricchezza di significati. L'uso poco convenzionale che i due jazzisti fanno dei rispettivi strumenti espande ulteriormente la musica che fuoriesce da trombe con l'ancia, da pianoforti in miniatura, filtrata da fogli di alluminio e pezze di feltro, e che prende forma in un armonioso sabba di suoni ….”.

“Groove & Move” are Pasquale Mirra and Gabriele Mitelli, musicians who need no introduction, very active on the new Italian jazz front, the young trumpeter for a shorter time than the vibraphonist, but with equal determination and talent. After many gigs the time had come to establish the already valuable results achieved by a duo with no intention to stop, because there is still a long way to go, and just as tasty could be the fruits of the next harvest. The nine tracks in «Water stress» sound like one long suite (as a matter of fact they are edited without the usual pause), an exciting and dreamlike journey along the endless possibilities offered by the interaction of several instruments played by the pair, without ever being tempted by a too–cutesy and easy (for musicians of their calibre) virtuosity, and instead looking for the purity of a poetry that involves the people it meets and doesn’t want to mark distances. A music, theirs, which still manages to surprise us, to catch us unprepared and then to amaze us, as happens with children. Even the choice of including interpretations of Paul Motian, Charles Mingus, Carla Bley and Abdullah Ibrahim (Namhanje is a folk song rearranged by the South African pianist in a historic album, «Echoes from Africa») proves to be appropriate next to the five original compositions and does not remove consistency or fluidity in this original work. In this regard, the Vincenzo Roggero’s beautiful words (“All About Jazz” web magazine) seem very relevant: “…the music is dense, sinuous, enveloping, with ancestral references to the purity of sound and melody, with accidents and minor deviations that, far from breaking the continuity of the flow of sound, amplify the richness of meaning. The unconventional use that the two jazz players make of their instruments further expands the music, that comes out of reed trumpets and miniature pianos, filtered through aluminium foil and pieces of felt, and takes shape into an harmonious Sabbat of sounds …” .
